Mercantile Development, Inc. - MDI - Operating sustainably

  • Procure environmentally preferable raw materials as available such as 40% post-consumer recycled and biodegradable
  • Use SFI®-certified corrugated suppliers. All corrugated is made from 100% renewable sources and is 100% recyclable. It contains as much recycled fiber as it can without sacrificing packaging integrity – averaging 46% industry-wide
  • Source domestically and use rail transport whenever possible to obtain the highest quality product with the least amount of transportation emissions

  • Obtain power from a 325.5 kW rooftop solar array consisting of 1,302 individual PV solar panels capable of generating over 400,000 kilowatt hours annually, resulting in the company generating over 60% of its own power from the sun and reducing MDI’s carbon footprint by eliminating 560 tons of CO₂ annually
  • Use green cleaning products for facility maintenance
  • Zero waste to landfill: 100% of office waste, corrugation and fiberboard core waste is used to produce electricity at a local waste-to-energy facility

  • Regularly upgrade and maintain production machinery so it runs efficiently over fewer shifts
  • Equip manufacturing and warehouse facilities with motion-sensors, T-8 lighting and special reflective fixtures that maximize lighting efficiency when it’s needed and save energy when it’s not. Savings exceed 13 tons of carbon dioxide annually
  • Electric fork trucks have replaced propane power reducing energy use by 30% and eliminating carbon monoxide fumes from the workplace

  • Develop smart and innovative products that cut waste by right-sizing every wiper for packaging, palletization and end use
  • Design packaging for minimal footprint and efficient palletization to save space and reduce fuel use
  • Use shrinkwrap in place of outer corrugated cartons to drastically reduce waste and lower transportation costs
  • Plan shipments using pallet optimization software for efficient load-building
